I've been much more careful with my research since then.Īs someone who went on a trip and had a good overall experience, I would just caution you on a few points: The second room was idyllic, except that we paid cash AND points AND dignity for it. When I objected, they flatly explained that that was "the Expedia room" and very snottily offered to move us to the kind of room we were originally promised for $250/night. We were given a small room with a full bed and a restaurant exhaust fan just below the window. ![]() I once used Thank You points - a shit-ton of them, in fact - to get a king room at an independent motel in in Carmel. You wonder why the fuck these jerks work with discount sites at all. However, there are definitely places that see "deals" customers as a liability and cut every possible corner with them. I had some special needs, and the staff was still just lovely. I recently stayed at a Marriott in SF for a negotiated rate that was less than half the going rate. Many places are awesome and treat all comers equally. Make a special point of looking for reviews from customers like yourself. I haven't used Getaways, but will submit a general caveat emptor on hotel deals: Do your research, and don't just depend on numerical ratings.
